About the Wine
Nestled among the rolling hills of Yallingup at the northern end of the renowned Margaret River wine region, our Cabernet Sauvignon originates from a small 30-year-old vineyard block planted on the Rivendell property itself. Over three decades, these mature vines have developed deep root systems through the ancient gravelly soils of the region, naturally producing lower yields and intensely concentrated fruit.
The elevated position of the vineyard, combined with cooling afternoon sea breezes from the nearby Indian Ocean, creates ideal conditions for slowly ripening, dry grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Warm days build richness and depth, while cool nights preserve elegance, structure and natural acidity — hallmarks of the finest Margaret River Cabernet wines.
Each vintage tells the story of the land, the season and the unique character of Yallingup. The fruit is carefully hand-selected from our oldest vines to showcase purity, balance and regional expression. Layers of blackcurrant, dark plum and subtle bay leaf are supported by fine tannins and carefully integrated oak, creating a wine with both immediate appeal and exceptional cellaring potential.

This commitment to site, patience and small-batch winemaking was recognised when our Cabernet Sauvignon received top gold honours in the Halliday Cabernet Challenge, standing among the leading Cabernet Sauvignons of the Margaret River region.
Today, visitors to Rivendell Winery can experience this wine where it was grown — overlooking the rolling hills of Yallingup, surrounded by the natural beauty of Western Australia’s southwest wine country.
2023 Halliday Cabernet Challenge Trophy
The Rivendell Estate 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded the 2023 Halliday Cabernet Challenge Trophy, naming the wine the best Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 vintage in the Margaret River Wine Regions.
The James Halliday Australian Chardonnay and Cabernet Challenge is a celebration of the world’s most popular two varieties and Australia’s outstanding regional diversity.
Cabernet on the world stage
Cabernet Sauvignon has become the flagship red wine of the Margaret River wine region and is widely regarded as one of the region’s greatest wine styles. Although Margaret River produces only a small percentage of Australia’s total wine, it has earned an international reputation for producing Cabernet Sauvignon wines of remarkable elegance, balance and longevity.
The unique combination of ancient gravelly soils, a Mediterranean climate and the strong maritime influence of the nearby Indian Ocean creates ideal growing conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. Warm, dry days allow the fruit to achieve full ripeness, while cool ocean breezes preserve freshness, natural acidity and fine tannin structure. This long, even growing season is one of the defining characteristics that separates Margaret River Cabernet from warmer inland regions.
Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon is celebrated for its distinctive style — powerful yet refined. Typical regional characteristics include blackcurrant, mulberry and dark plum fruit layered with notes of bay leaf, cedar, tobacco leaf and subtle dried herbs. The wines are known for their fine tannins, structure and ability to age gracefully for many years while maintaining elegance and purity.

Over the past several decades, Cabernet Sauvignon has played a major role in establishing Margaret River as one of the world’s premium wine regions. International critics and Australian wine authorities consistently recognise the region’s Cabernet wines among the country’s finest, with many drawing comparisons to the classic Cabernet blends of Bordeaux.
Today, Cabernet Sauvignon remains the benchmark red variety of Margaret River and a defining expression of the region’s identity. For wineries throughout the region — particularly in areas such as Yallingup — Cabernet Sauvignon represents not only a style of wine, but a reflection of the landscape, climate and long-standing winemaking tradition that have helped shape Margaret River’s global reputation.
